Both are common, both last a long time — but they behave very differently in salt air, cost different amounts, and look nothing alike from the street.
What Is Galvalume?
Galvalume is a steel panel coated with an aluminum-zinc alloy (roughly 55% aluminum, 43.5% zinc, 1.5% silicon). It ships unpainted with a natural silvery-gray metallic finish that dulls slightly over the first year or two, then holds a soft matte look for decades.

Galvalume vs Painted: Head-to-Head
1. Cost
Bare Galvalume is usually the cheapest metal roof you can buy in Florida — often 20–30% less than a comparable painted PVDF panel. If budget is the main driver and the panel profile is 5V crimp, Galvalume is the obvious call.
2. Salt-Air & Coastal Performance
This is where South Florida changes the math. Bare Galvalume performs very well inland, but within a few miles of the Atlantic — Boca Raton, Delray, Deerfield Beach, Jupiter, coastal Palm Beach — salt-laden air can attack any exposed cut edge or fastener over time.

For salt-exposed properties we usually recommend aluminum + PVDF paint — aluminum doesn't rust, and the PVDF topcoat shields the metal from UV and chloride attack.
3. Aesthetics & Curb Appeal
Galvalume has a raw, industrial silver look that either fits your house or doesn't — it's popular on modern-farmhouse and beach-cottage designs. Painted PVDF gives you real color choice: matte black, bronze, hartford green, medium bronze, slate gray, colonial red, and so on. If your HOA specifies a color, you're in painted territory.
4. Fade, Chalk, and Warranty
Kynar 500 / PVDF paint systems carry 30–40 year finish warranties covering fade and chalk. Galvalume has no paint to fade — it just weathers to a slightly darker gray over time, which some homeowners love and others don't.
5. Energy Efficiency
Both reflect a lot of heat compared to asphalt shingles. Painted PVDF is available in Energy Star cool-roof colors that hit higher solar reflectance (SRI) numbers than bare Galvalume — a real factor on Florida cooling bills. If cooling load matters, a cool-color painted panel beats bare Galvalume.
Which Should You Choose in South Florida?
Quick rule of thumb we use with homeowners in Palm Beach County:
- 👉 Coastal property (within ~3 miles of the ocean): painted aluminum PVDF standing seam — best long-term performance in salt air.
- 👉 Inland Palm Beach County property, tight budget: Galvalume 5V crimp is an excellent value.
- 👉 HOA neighborhood requiring a specific color: painted PVDF is your only real option.
- 👉 Modern / farmhouse aesthetic: either works — Galvalume for the raw look, matte black PVDF for the architectural look.
Final Thoughts
Galvalume and painted PVDF metal roofs are both great choices — they just solve different problems. Galvalume wins on price and works well inland. Painted PVDF wins on salt-air durability, color choice, and cool-roof performance. On the coast, the extra cost of painted aluminum almost always pays for itself.
