Aluminum vs Galvalume Metal Roof Near the Ocean
Galvalume warranties we read exclude homes within 1,500 to 2,800 feet of breaking surf. The aluminum warranty we read covers the coast with a yearly rinse.

Near the ocean, aluminum is the usual choice because the Galvalume warranties we read stop covering the roof there: Sheffield Metals excludes homes within 1,500 feet of breaking surf and Drexel Metals within 2,800 feet, with shorter limits for bays and canals. Englert's prepainted aluminum warranty covers homes within half a mile of salt water if the roof is rinsed every year.
Galvalume is steel with a zinc and aluminum coating (ASTM A792, the standard named in the Florida approvals for these panels). Aluminum roofing panels are solid aluminum. That difference is why manufacturers write their coastal terms so differently for the two metals, and the warranty is the clearest place to see where each one stops being covered.
How close to the ocean can you put a Galvalume roof?
Outside the distances below, the Galvalume warranties we read apply as written. Inside them, the roof is excluded.
| Warranty | Metal | Breaking surf | Large bay | Marsh or canal | Owner's duty |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drexel Metals 25-Year DREXLUME (revised January 2025) | Acrylic-coated Galvalume | Excluded within 2,800 ft | Excluded within 1,200 ft | Excluded within 600 ft of marshes and canals | Recommends a yearly freshwater rinse near the seashore |
| Sheffield Metals 50-Year Painted AZ50 Galvalume (2026 sample) | PVDF-painted Galvalume | Excluded within 1,500 ft | Excluded within 800 ft | Excluded within 400 ft of marsh | Also excludes areas with constant salt or fresh water spray |
| Sheffield Metals 45-Year Acrylic-Coated AZ55 Galvalume (2026 sample) | Unpainted, acrylic-coated Galvalume | Excluded within 1,500 ft | Excluded within 800 ft | Excluded within 400 ft of marsh | Same exclusions as the painted version |
| Englert 35-Year PermaColor 3500 coastal warranty (issued August 8, 2022) | Prepainted aluminum | Coastal terms apply within half a mile of a seacoast, salt water or brackish water | Yearly fresh-water rinse to AAMA 610.1, with records; no records voids the warranty | ||
Half a mile is 2,640 feet, so the zone where Englert's coastal aluminum terms apply overlaps the zone where Drexel's and Sheffield's Galvalume warranties stop. The warranty on your proposal is the one that counts, so ask for it by name before you sign.
Is painted Galvalume better than bare Galvalume on the ocean?
For the metal warranty, not in the documents we read. Sheffield Metals uses the same 1,500-foot surf limit for its PVDF-painted AZ50 Galvalume as for its unpainted AZ55, so paint changes the finish warranty and the look but not where the steel underneath stops being covered. Paint, color and heat inland are covered in Galvalume vs painted metal roofing.
Do bays, canals and the Intracoastal count as salt water?
They can. Drexel measures 1,200 feet from a large bay and 600 feet from marshes and canals, Sheffield 800 feet from a large bay and 400 feet from marsh, and Englert's half mile includes brackish water. None of the three names the Intracoastal Waterway, so for a Boca Raton, Delray Beach or Highland Beach home on or near it, get the manufacturer's answer in writing. Measure from the roof to the water's edge on a map and keep the screenshot with your proposal.
Is aluminum approved for Florida's hurricane zones?
Yes, in specific assemblies. Miami-Dade NOA 26-0515.17 covers Englert's Series 1300 panel in 0.032-inch aluminum over a steel deck (approved June 11, 2026, expires June 11, 2031). Florida approval FL 4595.3 R5 covers Tri County Metals' 1½-inch aluminum mechanical seam panel, 0.032 inch, on stainless steel slider clips over plywood in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (2020 code). FL 36904-R10 (evaluation issued December 17, 2023) lists 0.032-inch aluminum versions of nailstrip, snaplock and 5V panels for the HVHZ.
Check the uplift rating, though. In FL 36904-R10 the 0.032-inch aluminum version of the 1-inch nailstrip panel is rated to 110 psf of uplift against 142.5 psf for the 24-gauge steel version on the same deck, so the aluminum assembly has to be matched to your roof's design pressure. Snaplock vs nailstrip compares the ratings in more detail.
What about the screws and clips near salt water?
They matter as much as the panel. Englert's warranty requires fasteners to be electrically insulated from aluminum panels, for example with elastomeric grommets, to stop dissimilar metal contact, and it leaves the choice of long-lasting fasteners to the buyer. The 2026 Florida Building Code adds a corrosion section for roofing fasteners and connectors within 3,000 feet of a saltwater coastline; see metal roof changes in the 2026 code. The yearly rinse the coastal warranties ask for is in our metal roof maintenance checklist.
Which should you choose for a coastal Palm Beach County home?
Inside the distances in the table, price aluminum, because the Galvalume warranty will not cover the roof. Outside them, Galvalume carries its full warranty and costs less, and the choice comes down to looks, finish and budget. For barrier-island homes in Highland Beach, Manalapan and Ocean Ridge, our coastal metal roofing guide covers access and HOA review, and the Boca Raton cost guide covers price.
Frequently asked questions
Is a white aluminum roof a good choice in South Florida?
White is the paint color, so the real choices are the metal and the paint system. Close to salt water, aluminum with a coastal paint warranty is the pairing the documents on this page support. Check that the color you want is on the coastal list: Englert's coastal warranty names specific paint lines (PermaColor 3500 and PermaMetallic 3500).
Does a coastal metal roof warranty cover hurricane damage?
No. These are finish and corrosion warranties. Englert's, for example, excludes failures caused by hurricanes, falling objects and other external forces. Storm damage is a homeowners insurance question.
Does mill finish (bare) Galvalume work near the beach?
Sheffield Metals' warranty for unpainted, acrylic-coated AZ55 Galvalume excludes homes within 1,500 feet of breaking surf, the same distance as its painted version. Our Galvalume vs painted guide covers looks, heat and cost for homes farther inland.
